Want to know where I came from. Parents never told us anything

My name is James Aaron Cabrera Sr. Living in Killeen, Texas and 48. A retired Army soldier, I was moved to locate my ancestral background when my kids began to ask. I had a rather rough upbringing with many fights and yelling. No real communication between my parents and my siblings totaling (7). I am the youngest son of a WWII veteran and former employee of PPG in Corpus Christi, Tx. My father Joe D. Cabrera died December 3, 1980. in Corpus Christi,Tx. His father's name was Pedro Cabrera and had the name of Ruiz somewhere back in time. My father's mother was Eufemia Cabrera. Her maiden name was Diaz. She was also a mid-wife and delivered me in my parents home in Corpus Christi. My birth certificate shows my father was born in Mexico. We were not catholic. Taught from birth to be anything other than Catholic. I do not know why. My father once told me he grew up in Detroit, Michigan. My father was also trained as a classical concert pianist. Trained at the height of the depression era. He was born in 1923. He also spoke of the Canary Islands at various times during his drunken rages. And ties to high level ancestors within an Indian community. Can anyone help me find home? Thank you in advance.
