A black descendant of Joseph W Dabbs who lived in Hardeman cty TN. This is the Joseph Dabbs who died in 1845, shortly after he moved his “black family” to Pope Co., IL. Joseph was a Southern Abolitionist. Mr. Dabbs, having a number of slaves, and no family, brought his slaves out to Pope county, Illinois, and manumitted them according to law, purchased land for them and settled them on it, supplied their immediate wants, and left them under the care of a Mr. Sides. Mr. Dabbs, soon after died in Tennessee, and when his will was probated, it was found that he left all his estate to his ex-slaves.These emancipated Tennesseans as well as some “ born-free” individuals established a community in the hills of Pope County IL. Miller's Grove. I am a descendant of Edward Sammuel Dabbs born in TN 1832 who married California Callie Singleton in 1851. Looking for any additional information on Joseph W.Dabbs white family as well as any black descendants. Possibly related to Richard Dabbs.
