Today, it can be either. It is presumed to be originally Scot. At one time the MacFaddens are reported to have had their own clan. They were conquered by another clan, the MacLaines. A book of Scottish clans will have the information. Fadden is, however, said by some to be originally of Anglo-Saxon derivation, linguistically, and may include Germanic roots. Many Faddens in this country are descended from McFaddens who sailed from Northern Ireland. They were Scots who had been transplanted in Ireland. Generations later, we are an all American mix.
