I happen to live 3 miles from Smith's Castle and have seen the list at the castle of the 40 or so buried there who died that dreadful day. I have read that a "Nor-Easter" (also known now as the equivalent to "the perfect storm")hit that afternoon which contributed to the demise of everyone as they made there trek back from the swamp. Also nearby is "queensfort", a rock-type fox hole and hidden cave in the woods where the Narragansetts kept their queen in hiding during the remainder of the war. Also remaining is the great swamp where much of the 1910? monument is damaged and forgotten. If you have keen interest, I can try to get a copy of the dead when the castle re-opens in the spring.
