Maison Laberge - Current Owner & Condition

The following are e-mails that I received from Florian Laberge in Ottawa regarding the current owner and poor condition of Maison LaBerge. It would be a stretch for me to buy the house outright for $400K, but maybe this is our opportunity to come up with a solution.

Phil,

Thank you for your interest and reply to my email. I managed to meet with the actual tenant of the house in June for a visit. He told me that he had sought to buy the house for a number of years from the current owner without success. I suspect that the asking price ($400,000 Cdn) and the renovation costs were at the root of the problem. This is the figure that was given to me, but I do not know what the owner has in mind. My purpose is to see if there is a way, through someone or a corporation, to keep the house with family descendents or with someone willing to maintain it for posterity.

I have observed a general state of disrepair of the house and upkeep its surroundings, despite the attempts from the tenant to maintain the place, which made me wonder if the owner actually cared about the house. Some of these repairs are definitely within the responsibilities of the owner. For example, a wood stove had been inserted into one of the original fireplaces as a way to heat the house. This seems to create a fire hazard. It would be a shame to see the place burned down through negligence after the house survived 325 years. Other issues had to do with leaking water and sewer pipes. I have raised these issues with the government authorities responsible for the management of historical properties since the house the house has a heritage designation. Apparently they have been trying for years to reach the owner for an evaluation of what needs to be done without much success to date. However, it seems that my request was going to expedite a review of the premises.

Again, thank you for your reply. Do you mind telling me where you are from?

Florian

Mr. Philip LaBerge,

I saw on a website forum that you were searching for the current owner of the Laberge house located in L'Ange-Gardien, Quebec. The current owner's name is Ms. France Maerst and the tenant is Alain Sachel.

I visited the house in June 2008 and learned that the owner may be interested in selling. I may be able to provide other information if you wish.
