A contraversial question on Mabe history

Hello all:

I have a question to ask about the history of the Mabe family (as described at the Jim Mabe website). Did a lot of the Mabe women either marry first cousins, or not marry at all????

I am researching my husband's family tree and have all the names- but we go through Mary Ann Mabe, husband/friend? unknown. She had around 5 kids- you can't tell me that a women in the 1800's could have that many kids and not be married. Since it lists her name as a Mabe, and then her father as John Mabe, and all her children with the last name of Mabe, it just seems a little odd......

Also, there sure are a lot of unmarried Mabe women having children out of wedlock. Could somebody clear this up for me? (well, yes I know the facts....) but is this fairly common for that time and place? Are we talking mountain clans??? I'm not trying to be rude- I just am curious about this interesting Mabe family. I guess I thought it was a modern day "thing" to have kids out of wedlock- I figured people got married real quick and then changed the wedding date back a few months......
