I don't know any of the circumstances about the 'missing' husband. It's possible that that was no husband and the births of her children were illegitimate. I suspect that is the case since the children bore her maiden name. Maybe you can locate the death record for Lafayette. It might shed some light on his father's name. According to my records he was still alive after the 1920 census.
