James and Helen came to America from near Edinburgh in Scotland, in 1809. They first settled near Schenectady, New York and later moved to Allegheny County, New York where he stayed until his family was grown. They later moved to Sherrod Hill, Washington Township, PA. The father died there and was buried in the Sherrod Hill cemetery in Edinboro, PA.
