Mr. Roberts,
Though I do not recogize the name Samuel Clifton Mabon, my father and grandfather used to mention to me a granduncle named Clifton or Cliffton Mabon who would have been born in New Jersey some years before 1870. This "Uncle Cliff" was a partner with his brother James Mabon in the firm of Mabon & Company, which they founded about 1880 (+/- 10 years). Mabon & Company became Mabon, Nugent & Company sometime in the 1960s and now functions, under the name Mabon Securities, as the brokerage subsidiary of an Italian bank. I believe the family has entirely sold out its interest.
Clifton and James and at least four other siblings including my grandfather, Arthur Frederick Mabon, a Dutch Reform minister, were the children of William Augustus Van Vranken Mabon, also a Dutch Reform minister, who was born in 1822. WVVM was born in New York State and I have extensive information on him and his father, grandfather and grandmother, who came to the USA in 1796 from the lowlands of Scotland.
I think there is a good chance this is a match because of the brokerage connection-perhaps Samuel Clifton was Clifton's son; or, perhaps I have my granduncle's full name and dates wrong-not at all impossible, since my granddad was born in 1869 (though I had always understood him to be the youngest son.) I have various other details, too, which may be of interest. So, if you are interested, why not drop me a line at the above email address?
Cheers, David Mabon
