Abraham Johnson

My name is Aart Vermeulen from The Netherlands.
In one of the emails of Mrs Joan O'Banion I read the follwoing:
Can I ask you where you got the information on the parents of Dorthea Johnson? I have her parents as Abraham Johnson and Sarah Ayers. I don't have anything in hard copy to support that though. Dorthea Johnson and John Felter did have a daughter named Mariah. She married Joseph Ward in Pleasants Co., WV. From family notes I have, the Johnsons did come from Holland. Abraham Johnsons parents (as I have it) were Gilbert Johnson and Jane Smith. I would love to be able to get this straightened out. Weren't they from Rockland Co., NY?
Thanks for responding.
Joan

The Abraham Johnson that I know can be found in many records from MD and VA. He belonged to a group of tradesman (tobacco) from the city of Graft, The Netherlands. In the named records, his name is often linked with other Dutchmen, for whom he acted as their attorney at VA. The name Abraham Johnson is written in Dutch as Abraham Jansz or Janszoon, which means the son of Jan (John). His full name was Abraham Jansz Vermeulen. He had the honorary name 'Bestevaer', which ment that for many people he was 'like a father'. So in the records sometimes you also can find him as Abraham Jansz. Bestevaer. This Abraham is family of mine (his grandfather was mij grand-grand-grand-etc. father). He was married with Dirkje Dirks on 04.04.1699. This name differs from your info, i.e. Sarah Ayers. But it is possible that he married for a second time. Anyway, the name Sarah is Jewish like Abraham's.
The grave of Dirkje Dirks is still present in the city of Graft. From the archives in Holland, it could not be found where Abraham died or was buried.

Waiting for your reply on this information and hoping you can tell me more,
Regards, Aart Vermeulen
