Thanks, Paul!! I had no idea where that story about Brian Boru got started. He was the strongest and greatest king that Ireland ever had, and he brought in the "golden age" of Ireland. But he lived so long ago and of the many stories about him, only a few facts about his life still survive. The O'Brien line, as you said, claim descent from one of his sons, but they cannot prove it. The Gaelic names are impossible to pronounce, much less try to trace them throughout the centuries in a time when only certain people had education, and the surnames were not necessarily passed from father to son.
My major in college was education, which meant lots of history classes. But I've learned more about history since I got started in genealogy. I've read the mainly fictional books, based on the few facts, about Brian Boru that were written by Morgan Llyweyn, such as "Brian Boru" and "Lion of Ireland". They were interesting, brutal, lots of fighting. The "Lion..." was called a biography (be sure and use with a grain of salt!)
