I cannot answer your question, because I have never come across any Eleanor Highfield Miller. Am I correct in assuming from your summary that Eleanor and her husband John Miller lived in Platt County, MO from ca. 1817 to 1847, and that after he died Eleanor went back to Fleming County? Your message implies that Eleanor tried to latch on to Alcanon J. O'Bannon right after 2 November 1849, the day Alcanon's first wife, Charity, died. Apparently Alcanon had no interest in Eleanor because scarcely 3 months after Charity died Alcanon took on a second wife, Eliza Early, on 18 Feb 1850. Eliza died in 1868 and is buried in Poplar Run Cemetery, west of Elizaville, Fleming County, KY. Sometime after this Alcanon took on a THIRD wife, Mary E. Watts, who died 15 July 1875 and is also buried at Poplar Run. Alcanon appears alone in the census for Elizaville for 25 Jun 1880, and, according to Patrick O'Bannon, died "about" 4 August 1880. So if Eleanor Miller appeared at all in Alcanon's life, we O'Bannon researchers or not aware of it. Patrick O'Bannon, who descends from that branch of the family, is now living in Cincinnati with second wife and family and has put away all his work on the O'Bannon genealogy and does not want to be involved for some time. I will be brave and contact him to see if he can relent enough to tell what he knows, if any, about Elizabeth Miller. HOWEVER, I have a theory: as you know Alcanon J. O'Bannon was a physician, and may well have been the only physician in Fleming County. It is possible Elizabeth Miller, if she went back to Fleming County after her husband died in Platt County, MO, may have gone through some illnesses and run up such a debt in doctor bills with Dr. Alcanon that to settle her debts with him she had to surrender her dowry. This assumes that dowries could be used to settle debts, but not being a lawyer I am just theorizing about this. If Patrick O'Bannon replies and offers a better solution to this puzzle, I will let you know. Paul O'Vannon Vallejo, CA pobanno@rcn.com Notify Administrator about this message?
