As a long-time O'Bannon researcher who has built up a data base on this surname, I think I have found your ancestors. First of all, I have your great grandfather, father of Wilcie Ameral O'Bannon, as Earle Collins O'Bannon, not as Louis Collins O'Bannon. Earle (as he signed it on his WW I draft registration card on 5 May 1917), was b. 13 May 1896 in Red River County, TX and was still single the day he filled out the draft registration. Later that year or early in 1918, he married Bessie Elizabeth Miller somewhere in Texas. By the 1930 census for Lubbock, TX, he and Bessie had 4 sons: L. C. (which could be for "Louis Collins") b.abt. 1919, Wilcie Ameral b.18 May 1920, Edsel b. abt. 1922 and Lloyd b.abt. 1924. Sometime after this 1930 census, the family moved to Merced Co, CA where they died and are buried. According to information given me by other researchers of that line of O'Bannons, Earle's father was John Collan [sic] O'Bannon, b.25 May 1871 somewhere around Avery, Red River County, TX. I suspect John's middle name was Collins, and that "Collan" was a mishearing on someone's part. And the reason you couldn't find him and why he is hard to find was that he was a roving gambler who seldom stayed home to be counted on any census, but was home enough to father at least three sons (!). John may or may not have married a Mary "Mollie" Saunders (or Sanders) who was born in somewhere in Missouri on Feb 1873. Married or not, family info says they had three sons: Oscar b.10 Nov 1891, Floy b.Jul 1893, and Earle Collins b.13 May 1896. In the 1900 census for Justice Precinct 7 of Red River Co, TX, Mary Saunders has retained her maiden name and is living with sons Oscar and Floy in the household of her father Lenford P. Saunders while son Earle is found nearby in the household of his uncle Austin and Aunt Onnie Moore. (Onnie might have been Mary's sister?) John's O'Bannon ancestors are very well traced. His father was John Dawson O'Bannon, b.29 Mar 1827 in Pike Co, MS, and mother was Sarah Frances Kelly, b.9 Jun 1826 in MS. His grandfather was Dawson Burgess O'Bannon, b.24 Feb 1780 in Fauquier Co, VA, d.2 Jun 1853 in Lisbon, Cliaborne Parish, LA. His grandmother was Dawson's second wife, Martha "Patsy" Southern, b.abt. 1800 in SC. Dawson Burgess' father was Bryant O'Bannon, b.abt. 1747 Hamilton Parish, Prince William County (later Fauquier County), VA, d.bef. 1790 Wright District, Surrey County, NC. His mother was Ruth Burgess, b.abt. 1752 in Prince William Co, VA, d.aft. 1840 in GA. Bryant O'Bannon was son of William O'Bannon, b.abt. 1712 probably in Washington Parish, Westmoreland Co, VA, d.aft, 1781 probably in Mecklenburg Co, NC. William's wife was the widow Elizabeth Duncan, b.abt. 1712 in VA, d. probably after 1770 in NC. And William O'Bannon was the second son of the pioneer patriarch Bryant O'Bannon from Ireland, b.supposedly about 1683 somewhere in Ireland (Tipperary not proven), d. supposedly 2 Jun 1762 (will probated 25 Sep 1762). It was according to a Bible held by the above mentioned John Dawson O'Bannon that Bryant's wife was one Zena Sarah Isham, b.probably abt. 1685 probably in VA, d.bet. 1720 and 1760 in Fauquier Co, VA. The Bible got burned in a house fire without ever being photocopies, and the person who had possessed that Bible just died a week or so ago. This should give you plenty to chew on for a few days. I have found enough to see that Wilcie Ameral joined the Marines on 31 Jul 1940, rose to the rank of Lt. Col, died in Mariposa Co, CA in Mar 2001 and is buried at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery at Gustine, CA. There is plenty of information on John Collins O'Bannon's ancestors, so feel free to contact me directly. I live in Vallejo, CA and back in the 1950's used to stop by and see old family friends (now gone) in Kingsburg. Best wishes. Paul O'Bannon Vallejo, CA Notify Administrator about this message?
