Michael Augustine O'Connell was born in County Kerry Ireland in 1839. He firstly went to Europe and fought for Pope Pius IX against Garibaldi. Then at the outbreak of the civil war in the States he went to New York and enlisted as a 2nd lieutenant in the Irish Brigade. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant before being killed in action in 1864.
