I would like to Find details if possable about where my great Grandfather came from in Ireland, we believe it was from County Sligo, but are not sure, he never really talked about his upbringing.
What we do now is that he ran away from Home aged roughly 15 yrs from Ireland to England, the reason we think was that his Mother had remarried and their was friction with the new step father.
When John Dowd arrived in England, we know he had dropped the O' from his surname, we know this for sure, because in my fathers early yrs he remembers old Irish folks refusing to see him as a Dowd, always refering to him as an O'Dowd, maybe they travelled with John Dowd (my Great Grand Father) from Ireland at the same time, or knew him there.
John Dowd, arrived in Burtonwood, Lancashire, England some yrs previous to the 1881 Census where he is shown as aged 26yrs Married to Mary Anne aged 24yrs with two children, Mary Ellen (3yr) and James (1yr).
we know that he lived at #66 Hindley's Row, Burtonwood, in 1881 from that census, next door to him, lived his wifes Parents. John (50) and Mary (52) Mullaney, also Irish imigrants, Its believed John Dowd lived with the Mullaney family on his arrival in Burtonwood,
So heres what I know, Hope someone maybe Has some info on a John O'Dowd that was born somewhere in Ireland about 1855/56 , whose mother had remarried, sometime around the time he ran away from home at 15 yrs, this would be about 1870.
