George Qualls - Arkansas - Mystery
Posted by: Ann Hill (ID *****8520) Date: June 23, 2007 at 13:18:51
  of 1956

George W. Qualls, b in VA was in Arkansas 1850-and beyond. He apparently had 2 families. In 1870 in Washington County, AR, he is married to Nancy. (name mis-spelled as Quarles) They have the following kids: Mary, 21; millie, 18; Martha, 11, and Fannie, 9.

Enumerated next to this family is: E Smith (Eliza/Louisa) and her kids: James, 18; Houston, 14; Adaline, 12; William,9; E. 8; Joseph, 4; John, 2.

In 1880, Nancy has apparently died and Louisa is now married to George. All her kids use the surname of George, rather than Smith. One researcher believes that George W. had two "lives" and two "wives" at the same time.
Is that true OR did he formerly adopt her kids.

She is still alive in 1920 and living in Stephens Co., OK with her son William H. Qualls.

George had a son PETER, born 1872. Now, because of his birth between censuses, I don't know if Peter was by his first "wife" or his second.

Peter marries E.M. Evans (Eletha Minnie) in 1889. He dies
1899 and is buried in Sand Hill Cemetery in Newton Co. AR.

Eletha remarries in 1900 to Charles Hurl Bethany. Her two childen: Calvin and Bertie Mae are in the household in 1900 and 1910. The 1900 census is really messed up and lists them as Bethany with atrocious transcriptions by ancestry.

I will appreciate any feed-back to this mystery. Ann - annh2@peoplepc.com
