There is in the 1850 Federal census for District 26, Cherokee County AL a James Laurence b. 1799 in TN with a son James b. 1830 TN. First child born in AL is a William H. age 11 so the family left TN and arrived in AL abt 1839.
You might check to see if he was in a militia for TN as well as AL. There were several "Indian Wars" before 1850 as well as the Mexican War.
