How to find service records

My husband's ancestor, William Townsley of Greene Co.,OH served in the war of 1812 and according to info we have, he was in the 1st regiment of the US Rifles. His widow later received land in Iowa because of his service in that war. Would like to know the particulars of his service - length, rank, etc.
