I received my ancestor's Widow's App from NARA today, but it leaves some unanswered questions. The ancestor in question is James T. or James I. Gillespie, widow: Clarkey Gillespie of Franklin Co., TN. Her husband died in 1814 while serving in Capt. Gordon's Co. of the TN Militia. The app primarily deals with the 1853-54 approval of her initial 5 year half-pay pension rate, then apparently a renewal of her pension benefits for life in 1858. However, it does not tell me where my ancestor died or was buried. Also, apparently the widow received a land warrant based upon proof of marriage and her husband's service, but I have no idea in which state the warrant was granted. My questions are: 1. Where did James T. or James I. Gillespie die and where is he buried? 2. Do I now need to file forms with NARA for his service record? Would this give me the info I need? 3. Where can I obtain proof of their marriage, as submitted to the State of TN on a previously filed document by the widow? 4. Where can I determine where the land warrant was granted so that I can determine whether or not a child (or someone else) exercised it? 5. If I file forms with NARA, will this give me the land warrant info I need? If anyone could help with what my next steps should be to locate the above information, I would certainly appreciate it.
